How it works

Mounting Through the Roof Sheet

Pierced-fix components fasten through the roof sheet using the specified screws and sealing interface. This differs from a substructure-fixed connection, where the attachment is made to the supporting steel or timber below the roof covering.

The EPC must establish the appropriate load path for the roof. Where the connection needs to engage the underlying structure, see mounting to the roof substructure for the relevant hanger-bolt and bracket routes.

Find the Arrangement for Your Roof

Start with the roof profile and panel layout. The shape and spacing of the roof ribs, together with the module’s permitted clamping zones, determine which arrangement can be used.

Options for IBR and Trapezoidal Profiles

IBR landscape arrangements include crest-mounted short rails and a side-mounted short rail. The 50 mm high crest-mounted short rail suits IBR 686 and similar profiles with a 35 mm crest. The taller 67 mm high crest-mounted short rail is optimised for standard IBR with a crest of 20 mm or more, and is the rail used in the IBR landscape kit. The crest-mounted short rails are for flush landscape mounting only and must never be used for tilt.

Portrait short rails suit all steel IBR and corrugated roofs for flush portrait mounting. Flat-top brackets carry full rails, usually in portrait, with landscape possible. Imported crest-mounted short rails are anodised; locally made crest-mounted short rails are tumbled or mill finish. Confirm the portrait short rail finish with Lumax.

Tilt on IBR 686 and similar profiles uses the low support (the preferred route), the portrait short rail or the side-mounted short rail, with front and rear tilt supports. The low support does not carry panels directly and can also support cable trays and walkways.

Other trapezoidal sheets can differ in crest width, rib spacing and side geometry. A component specified for IBR should not be assumed to fit every trapezoidal roof. Provide the profile details when requesting selection assistance.

Options for Corrugated Roofs

Corrugated landscape mounting uses short rails shaped for the corrugated profile. Portrait short rails and corrugated full-rail interfaces provide further options for the appropriate layout. Use the corrugated-specific connection for the chosen arrangement.

A locally made portrait short rail is available. Tilt on corrugated roofs uses the corrugated short rail or the portrait short rail, with front and rear tilt supports, in either panel orientation. Send the roof profile, orientation, layout and site location for tilt selection.

Rails, Sealing and Tilted Mounting on Metal Roofs

Choose Rails Around the Module Layout

How rib positions, module clamping zones and cost comparison guide the rail choice.

Landscape short rails provide local attachment points for panels positioned horizontally. Portrait short rails serve documented vertical panel arrangements. Full rails extend beneath the modules and connect through the matching roof interface.

Selection depends on how the rib positions align with the module’s permitted clamping zones. Panel size, orientation and roof geometry also affect the connection positions and how loads pass into the roof. Full rails do not remove the need to check the supporting sheet and its fixings.

Where more than one arrangement meets the requirement, compare the component quantities, installation approach and quoted material cost alongside your rail preference. Neither short rails nor full rails are automatically the best or lowest-cost choice for every roof.

Sealing and Installation Detail

EPDM interfaces, sealing washers and correct installation.

Key point: A sealing component alone does not guarantee the completed roof’s waterproofing.

EPDM interfaces and sealing washers form part of the specified installation. Correct placement and tightening matter to the seal. Follow the applicable Technical Data Sheets, fastener requirements and roof supplier’s requirements. A sealing component alone does not guarantee the completed roof’s waterproofing.

The EPC is responsible for the roof and structural-capacity assessment, module layout and installation. Module clamping zones and bonding requirements remain applicable to both short-rail and full-rail systems.

Tilted Mounting on Metal Roofs

Which short rails and supports can carry tilt on IBR and corrugated roofs.

Key point: The crest-mounted short rails must never be used for tilt.

Tilted arrangements use front and rear tilt supports on a suitable roof interface. Both panel orientations are possible.

  • IBR 686 and similar profiles: the low support (preferred), the portrait short rail or the side-mounted short rail.
  • Corrugated roofs: the corrugated short rail or the portrait short rail.
  • Full rails on flat-top brackets can be tilted, but this is uncommon because it uses more material.
  • The crest-mounted short rails are for flush landscape mounting only and must never be used for tilt.

A wind assessment is strongly recommended for tilted systems, especially at high-wind sites.

Send your details for tilt selection

Send the roof profile, orientation, layout and site location. Site location is required for tilted structures.

Standard kits

Standard Kits for IBR and Corrugated Roofs

Use the kit specified for the roof profile and module layout. Panel dimensions and permitted clamping positions must suit the arrangement. Larger or different requirements can be supplied as components against your layout or material list.

Questions

IBR and Corrugated Mounting Questions

Can portrait panels use short rails?

Yes. Portrait short rails are available for documented corrugated and IBR applications. The panel size, layout and permitted clamping positions must suit the arrangement.

Does every IBR bracket fit every trapezoidal roof?

No. Trapezoidal profiles vary. Check the actual roof geometry against the selected component’s application and dimensions.

Can I use a flush-mount short rail for tilt?

Some can. The corrugated short rail, the portrait short rail and the side-mounted short rail can carry tilt with front and rear tilt supports. The crest-mounted short rails must never be used for tilt. Send the roof profile, orientation, layout and site location for selection assistance.

When should I use substructure fixing?

Use the substructure route where the project’s required connection is to the supporting steel or timber. The EPC determines the required load path and roof suitability. Lumax can assist with the relevant component selection.

Do full rails replace waterproofing or roof checks?

No. Full rails change the module support arrangement. The roof interface still needs the specified fasteners, sealing detail and assessment of the roof’s ability to carry the installation.
